Introduction to the Musée des Confluences

Where the Rhône and Saône rivers meet stands one of Lyon’s most iconic cultural landmarks: the Musée des Confluences. Its monumental glass-and-steel structure houses a 3,000 m² permanent exhibition and a constantly changing programme of temporary exhibitions, tracing the grand narrative of the human adventure from its origins to the present day. An endless source of discovery for young and old alike.

To begin with, the museum's architecture is incredible! Made of glass, concrete and stainless steel, it stands erect like a beacon on the headland at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers.
Such a building could only house an exceptional museum, one that encompasses scientific, technical and societal knowledge relating to Earth, humanity, history and geography. In other words, it is a gateway to the world, the universe and knowledge in general. How fascinating is that!
It opens up a whole host of possibilities and promises many a discovery!

This is an essential step in Lyon's cultural landscape. It has lots of surprises in store for us and is an opportunity to travel and grow.

Useful tip

Access to the Museum and its exhibitions is included in the Lyon City Card, which also enables users to beat the queue!

Accessibility

The Musée des Confluences, accredited by 'Tourisme et Handicap'

In April 2026, the museum was awarded the ‘Tourisme et Handicap’ (Tourism and disability) label for visitors with hearing, intellectual and mobility impairments. This label recognises the efforts made to improve the museum’s accessibility through the numerous facilities and support tools put in place, such as the installation of an audio guide system and induction loops, the provision of self-service walking sticks, and the tactile tours and visits in French Sign Language (LSF) on offer.
