Where to find public toilets in Lyon?

This kind of small detail can make a big difference when visiting a city, with the potential to transform the most pleasant trip into a most unpleasant and desperate search (especially with children in tow!). When the weather is hot and to fill up the family’s water bottles, you also need to know where you can get drinking water. This question may seem trivial, but it is essential. Here are our tips to find public toilets and drinking water in Lyon’s various districts.

Fourvière hill

When visiting Fourvière Basilica, go to the left side (as you face the front of the basilica) of the esplanade. Make the most of your toilet trip to see the new reception centre, where you can get information about the site.

Vieux-Lyon

Before you set off along the paved streets of Vieux-Lyon (Old Lyon), remember to make the all-important toilet stop! There are free, staffed public toilets next to the entrance to the Vieux-Lyon metro station, at the end of Avenue Adolphe Max. Open every day from 8 am to 7:30 pm Essential to explore Old Lyon's famous traboules (hidden passageways) with peace of mind!

In the Saint-Georges neighborhood, there are toilets at the LPA Saint-Georges car park at 6 Place Benoît-Crépu.

Presqu’île

With its many monuments and shops, the peninsula between the Rhône and Saône is perfect for a stroll. Here are the toilets in the Presqu’île district, for a stress-free stroll! Near Place des Terreaux, go to the LPA Terreaux car park, the entrance of which is at 23 Place des Terreaux. The toilets are at the bottom of the steps.

To the south of the Presqu’île, make a stop at Place de la République. The municipal toilets at the LPA République car park are free and staffed. Go down the stairs in front of the shop Habitat, and the entrance is immediately on your left. Open every day from 8 am to 7:30 pm

Bellecour, Europe’s largest pedestrian square, welcomes you! Need information about Lyon ? Visit us at the Tourist Office on the square (on the side nearest the Rhône), with the flags on the roof. We are open 7 days a week from 9 am to 6 pm. (Closed on 25 December and 1 January). As you come out of the tourist office, walk round to the other side. At the municipal public toilets (free and staffed) at the rear of the building, you can fill your water bottles and take a welcome toilet break! Open every day from 8 am to 7:30 pm

There are also toilets at the LPA Antonin Poncet car park (entrance near the Charité clock tower).

Further to the south, near Perrache station. The station toilets (in the railway station) are not free but are well maintained.

Looking for contemporary architecture? To make sure you don’t miss a thing in the newly developed Confluence district, begin your visit with a stop at the comfortable toilets in the Confluence Shopping Centre. On the 2^nd floor, these free, quality toilets, in keeping with the standard of the building, bring to mind the cabins of a luxury boat.

A la Croix-Rousse

In this former silk-worker’s district, the stairs offering breathtaking views over the city are worth the effort! Before beginning your descent of the slopes of Croix-Rousse hill, make a stop at the LPA Gros Caillou car park (entrance at 167 bis Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse) to avoid any urgent calls of nature!

Left bank of the Rhône

Make sure a pressing need doesn’t spoil a romantic walk along the banks of the Rhône: visit the LPA Fosse aux Ours car park in Guillotière. The toilet entrance is in the pier of the bridge, near the pools at the foot of the terraced banks (large steps).

Further to the north, there are toilets at the LPA Morand car park (by Place des Terreaux). Pedestrian access is via Place Maréchal Lyautey (lift opposite No. 12).

Along the river banks, there are also automatic toilets.

In the Part-Dieu district, there are several options around the station. There are toilets at Part-Dieu station and on the ground floor of Part-Dieu shopping centre (neither is free).

Doing some shopping at Halles Paul Bocuse (102 Cours Lafayette)? There are toilets here also, which are very welcome before tasting the local specialties on offer or having a few drinks (with moderation of course!).
