Choreographer Mats Ek seized the earthbound power of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Fuelling his unique, highly theatrical style, he created an exceptional, reworked version of the piece for the Opéra de Lyon Ballet and full Orchestra. Sharon Eyal, one of the most famous choreographers in the world, blended ballet and clubbing into House, a techno-infused love letter to dance – and a novelty for our Ballet. The piece breaks down in several parts, each representing a room of the house inhabited by the dancers; but this world, this home, is in an crisis depicted through several solo or group sequences, echoing and melting into one another. The score, composed by techno music DJ Ori Lichtik, is a rhythmic combination of nightclub beats and ballet music, with contemporary undertones. While this ode to dance – in its every form – is deployed through sensuous yet exact gestures, its clinical quality is transcended by the deep emotion it conveys. Intense controversy ensued when Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring premiered in 1913 in Paris, in the form of an all-time classic production choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky and performed by the Ballets Russes. This symphonic masterpiece has inspired dozens of choreographers to try and match the bursting energy and primal quality conveyed by this ritual celebration of a new season. The world-famous Mats Ek tackled the piece in 1984, reworking it in 2022 for the English National Ballet before introducing our own Ballet dancers to that latest version: this season, they are performing The Rite of Spring for the first time since 1982. Channelling the music’s tribal energy, powerful gestures and sensuous force, Mats Ek offers a bold and poetic take on the piece. The dancers’ performance is fuelled by the live accompaniment of their Orchestra counterparts, conducted by Christoph Altstaedt.
