The passion shared by the audience at the Maison de la Danse and Grupo Corpo has endured ever since the company’s first visit to Lyon in 1994. Choreographer Rodrigo Pederneiras has skilfully drawn on Brazil’s rich cultural heritage of traditional music and dance to create a unique style of movement. In a blend of samba, classical ballet, contemporary dance and African traditions, the twenty-one virtuoso performers present two pieces set between land and sea. The company’s signature piece, *Parabelo*, has retained the intensity of its original creation thirty years on. Set to music by Tom Zé and José Miguel Wisnik, it pays tribute to the rural communities of the Nordeste. Piracema, with its tribal, lyrical and electronic sounds, draws inspiration from the migratory movements of fish during the breeding season. A beautiful allegory evoking creation as an act of survival, set against a backdrop designed using 82,000 sardine tins!
