One day, when Gustav Mahler was singing Wagner a little too loudly with some other students, his landlady kicked everyone out.

Born in Bohemia, Mahler entered the Vienna Conservatory at age 15. But before taking the helm of the Vienna State Opera, it was in Prague that he forged his reputation as a conductor. He was one of the first to conduct Wagner’s operas while adhering strictly to the master’s intentions. Although he never conducted *Parsifal*, he appreciated the work and would certainly have agreed with Nietzsche’s assessment that the prelude was “the greatest masterpiece of the sublime.” One of his main sources of inspiration was *Des Knaben Wunderhorn* [The Child’s Wonder Horn], a collection of German folk poems published by Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim from 1805 to 1808. A century later, fascinated by the depth and richness of these simple texts, he set twenty-four of them to music in lieder that would go on to influence his symphonies. An unparalleled freshness, set in wonderful musical settings.
