Daniil Trifonov

Daniil Trifonov is one of those artists you never tire of listening to, and following a memorable performance of Brahms’s Second Concerto in February 2026, the Auditorium de Lyon was eager to welcome him back. Unrivalled in the Romantic repertoire, he follows in the footsteps of Schubert’s ‘Wanderer’ – that restless traveller who wanders in search of happiness. Venturing off the beaten track, Trifonov takes great leaps through time and space. Swept along by Handel in a frenzied jig, he combines the Baroque dance suite with Stravinsky’s Sonata. From this dizzying leap emerges a strange kinship, with Bach as the Sonata’s guiding figure. Let us not believe Schönberg, a contemporary of Stravinsky, when he mocks the little ‘Modernski’ who ‘had himself given an old-fashioned haircut’! Let us instead cross the ocean to land, alongside the pianist, on the shores of his Dominican wife’s homeland. In Brazil, Argentina or the Dominican Republic, other rhythms call the tune. With a haunting nostalgia that permeates the Latin waltzes, zambas and milongas, right through to a tango composed by Daniil Trifonov himself – a regular encore at his recitals, which he now officially presents to us here.
