Presentation of the Coteaux du Lyonnais

With less than 200 hectares of vines, the Coteaux du Lyonnais vineyard is small in size but great in diversity. Spanning 30 to 40 kilometres, from the Azergues Valley in the north to Grigny-sur-Rhône in the south, the vineyard benefits from numerous terroirs, with land made up of granite, clay-limestone and even volcanic rock in places. A mosaic that offers diverse and varied wines, likely to appeal to the widest possible audience.

Although the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée was created in 1984, the vineyard itself has been around a lot longer, as the first traces of viticulture in the area date back to the Gallo-Roman era, in around 45 BC.

The other distinctive feature of this vineyard is the particularly strong environmental commitment of the young winemakers. Of the 20 wineries that make up the Appellation, a third are certified organic and/or biodynamic.

Tours and tastings at the vineyard

Just like their colleagues in the Beaujolais region, the winemakers of the Coteaux du Lyonnais are increasingly developing wine tourism in order to provide visitors with an authentic and comprehensive experience. They are following in the footsteps of the Domaine de Prapin in Taluyers, which offers tours, tastings, wine-related workshops and even dinners with food and wine pairings.

How to get to the Coteaux du Lyonnais?

To get to the south of the Appellation, particularly to the Domaine de Prapin in Taluyers, take the 245 bus from the Gare d’Oullins stop, on metro line B. Once at the winery, you will be able to visit the estate and take part in a tasting (subjet to booking). The 165, 214 and 220 bus lines will take you respectively to Millery, Saint-Laurent-d’Agny and Montagny, other towns within the AOC.

To get to the north of the Appellation, several TCL network bus lines will also take you to the vineyards, departing from the Gorge de Loup station in Lyon, namely the 216 and 203 buses. They stop in Sain-Bel, and even in Bessenay.
