Just 40 minutes from Grenoble and 1 hour 50 minutes from Lyon, the Chamrousse ski resort offers a winter sports experience for the whole family!
Did you know?
Chamrousse is an iconic French ski resort! In 1878, Henri Duhamel, a mountaineer from Grenoble, discovered a pair of skis on the Scandinavian stand at the International Exhibition in Paris. Intrigued by his find, he did his first downhill runs (and climbs back up in snowshoes!) on the slopes of Chamrousse.
The resort is also known for hosting the alpine skiing events of the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble. The place was gripped by the exploits of the French skiers Jean-Claude Killy and Marielle Goitschel!
Chamrousse now boasts a 44-km Nordic skiing area, 90 km of alpine skiing with 42 runs (mainly blue and red) and 15 ski-lifts, at an altitude of between 1,400 and 2,250 metres. The resort is certainly in (ski) pole position!
Winter sports of every kind!
In addition to the alpine ski area which caters for all levels (with 6 black runs and 16 red ones, experienced skiers will have plenty of options), the resort also offers great family areas.
One not to be missed is La Montagne de Téo, a fun slope themed around the resort's mascot Téo the fox cub... With its sound effects and visuals to touch it's a great way to gain confidence!
And for people looking for something really special, night skiing provides an opportunity to hit the slopes at sunset and enjoy a stunning view of Grenoble as the lights go on.And if good food is what you're after, then the night skiing + Savoyard fondue deal in one of the resort's restaurants is just made for you!
Expert skiers can head for the Snow Park, with its modules and jumps, whilst thrill-seekers (slightly less adventurous) will love the 2-km luge track which is accessible by chairlift.
You can also have a go at Snowtubing, where you descend the slopes sitting in a big inflatable ring.
Chamrousse's unspoilt nature
Surrounded by forest, the resort offers incredible panoramic views of Grenoble and the Vercors, Oisans and Chartreuse massifs... It's difficult to keep your eyes on the curves!
The Nordic skiing area, which is a listed Natura 2000 site, offers themed trails for a great way to discover nature. 7 snowshoe trails provide the perfect opportunity to get out and admire the scenery. And overhanging the valley, there's an igloo village - an amazing place to eat or stay.
Finally, there are lots of outdoor activities for people of all ages: sled dogs, snowmobiles, ice driving or ice diving...
One visit to the mountains and you're hooked!
