What if a single sound frequency could reveal the laws that govern our bodies and our ears? Louison Valette makes sound dance.
Trained at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon, Louison Valette has developed a unique artistic practice at the crossroads of choreography, sound design and the visual arts. LA440 is her new work, presented in collaboration with GRAME, the National Centre for Musical Creation in Lyon. On stage, two performers inhabit a meticulously crafted sound installation: speakers, cables, loop pedals and microphones delineate a space where sound directs movement. Taking LA 440 Hz—the universal reference note—as her starting point, the choreographer explores the standardisation of our gestures, our voices and our bodies. Through the rigours of rehearsal, the two dancers seek out the flaws in this ‘template’ to reveal alternative harmonies. LA440 is a sensory and reflective exploration of what harmonises with us or constrains us.
