Lucinda Childs, a major figure in American choreography, and Alessandro Sciarroni, whose work lies at the intersection of dance and visual arts, both offer a striking physical intensity, a taste for precise movements, a form of dance that takes up the space, and the promise of a total artwork, where music, dance, and visual art echo and enhance one another.

Dance stands as a landmark in the history of contemporary choreography. Moving beyond a certain minimalism, Lucinda Childs presents a meticulously calibrated ballet, enriched by Sol LeWitt’s filmed images in an enhancement of the performance. Set to a hypnotic score by world-renowned American minimalist and conceptual composer Philip Glass – whose 90th birthday will be celebrated this season – the choreography unfolds in a continuum of virtuosic movement, multiplying diagonals, jumps, and ensemble patterns. A dazzling work that continues to captivate, and of which the Lyon Opera Ballet remains a distinguished custodian.

Alessandro Sciarroni is featured at the world’s leading festivals – from the Venice Biennale to the Festival d’Automne – and was awarded a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. He has found in dance a true home; his creations are deeply emotional, exploring spinning, choral voice, and traditional folk forms. He had already collaborated with the Ballet twice, notably for the Biennale de la danse. This season, he is putting the myth of the American Lonesome Cowboy to the test.
