Preljocaj at the height of his artistry: a deeply moving portrait of grief, brought to life by nineteen performers of rare power.
Angelin Preljocaj is a leading figure in French contemporary dance and an artist closely associated with the Maison de la Danse, which has supported his work for many years. *Requiem(s)* was born out of a deeply personal grief. The loss of his father, mother and several close relatives in 2023 led the choreographer to explore grief through the only language that truly belongs to him: the body in motion. Nineteen exceptional performers take to the stage with tribal energy and absolute precision. From Bach to System of a Down, from Mozart to Ligeti, the music propels the dancers through a succession of hypnotic tableaux, oscillating between collapse and rebellion, tenderness and trance. Drawing on medieval dances of death as well as the raw energy of contemporary ballet, Preljocaj transforms personal grief into a collective and cathartic ritual. He does not choreograph death. He choreographs what remains: memory, the rage to exist, the stubborn beauty of human movement.
