Gems of Elizabethan music, John Dowland’s *Lachrimae* consist of elegiac pavanes interspersed with galliards, which delightfully illustrate the epigram adorning the score: ‘Whether he rages or weeps, he whom Fortune has not blessed.’ Joy returns with Purcell’s ‘Golden Sonata’ (in Britten’s version for piano quartet), before the solemnity of Handel (the sarabande heard in Stanley Kubrick’s *Barry Lyndon*) and the romantic reverie of John Field (the inventor of the nocturne, before Chopin). Britten brilliantly reworks the *Lachrimae* and treats us to his mischievous ‘Playful Pizzicato’, before Elgar’s exquisite final serenade.
