Schumann / Beethoven

Live music & concerts

Last updated date : 26/06/2026

Instead of Schumann’s Piano Concerto, Cédric Tiberghien specifically chose these two *Introductions and Allegros*—later works that were overlooked because of their unusual format, yet just as brilliant as their famous predecessor.

Behind the towering peak of Schumann’s Piano Concerto lie two less-traveled but equally exhilarating summits, composed in the wake of his triumph. A sort of miniature concerto, they are highly innovative in their structure, condensing the three movements of a traditional concerto into a single movement. Schumann dedicated them respectively to his wife, Clara, and to their friend and protégé, Johannes Brahms. “I am very much looking forward to playing it—it is a passionate piece, and I will, of course, perform it as it should be,” Clara Schumann promised before the premiere of the first one, in 1850, in Leipzig. Following this romantic effervescence, Beethoven will bring the rural breeze of the “Pastoral” Symphony, allowing us to hear streams, birds, thunderstorms, and peasant revelry in a score that never fails to enchant.
