The great Curtis Harding will open the hatches of the spaceship carrying the songs from his fourth album, Departures & Arrivals: Adventures of Captain Curt. The American musician conceived it as the audio diary of a pilot lost in space, filled with elegant psychedelic soul, coated in funk and disco. This is a formula that Marvin Gaye experimented with in 1976 with I Want You, a daring album that has earned its stripes over time as a cornerstone of modern soul. For the 50th anniversary of the record, American crooner José James – accompanied by distinguished guests, including China Moses – offers a fervent reinterpretation. Opening the evening, Annie Caldwell-Brown – 55 years after her debut with the Staples Jr. Singers – brings her husband and children along for the ride in a celebration of authentic blues, also caressed here and there by a light and danceable funk breeze.
