Who better to kick off this Czech season than the ensembles founded in 2005 by Václav Luks specifically to rediscover their country’s entire musical heritage? Zelenka, one of Bach’s most important contemporaries, is their favorite composer and even inspired their name. Indeed, 1704 was the year this musician from Central Bohemia burst onto the Prague music scene, marking the dawn of Czech Baroque music. Thirty-five years later, while serving at the court in Dresden, he composed his *Missa votiva* in thanksgiving for his recovery. The recording of this work by Luks and his ensembles in 2005 (Zig-Zag Territoires) caused quite a stir, revealing music rich in contrasting emotions, with a radiant and virtuosic style that makes the Missa votiva Zelenka’s sacred masterpiece. The Dixit Dominus, a Roman work by the young Handel, rounds out this invigorating concert.
