The Mediterranean has always been a sea of encounters and exchanges, and each shore has drawn the other since ancient times. The musical tradition of Al-Andalus bears witness to this. The term refers to the territories of the Iberian Peninsula that were under Muslim rule—either intermittently or continuously—between 711 and 1492 (territories of which present-day Andalusia constitutes only the southernmost part). Al Ala, the Arab-Andalusian music, explores themes such as love, nature, the joy of life, spirituality, and nostalgia. Organized into suites called noubas, it is based on specific melodic modes and evolving rhythms, ranging from slow, contemplative tempos to more dynamic passages. It is performed with traditional instruments such as the lute, the violin, the qanun, the tar, and the rebab. Beyond its artistic dimension, Al Ala music constitutes a living cultural heritage, passed down from generation to generation in cities such as Fez, Tetouan, and Rabat. It embodies a historical memory and an identity deeply rooted in Morocco’s history, at the crossroads of Arab, Berber, and Andalusian influences.
