A self-taught artist and devotee of happenings and all forms of ephemeral art, Jean-Claude Guillaumon left his mark on the Lyon art scene. The macLYON presents the first retrospective dedicated to this unclassifiable artist, known for his wit and irony.

Born in Lyon in 1943, Jean-Claude Guillaumon devoted himself to painting before discovering happenings and environmental art in 1964 at the Venice Biennale. Curious about all forms of creation, he turned to the Fluxus movement and collaborated with artists such as Ben, George Brecht and Robert Filliou, as well as Daniel Buren, Olivier Mosset and ORLAN. Adopting the maxim ‘Art is life,’ he organised numerous happenings and contributed to the rise of this alternative movement in the Lyon region, shaking up the local art scene and its institutions in the process. At a time when the emergence of new art forms linked to the second avant-garde remained highly centralised, particularly in Paris, these artists working in the regions appeared as true pioneers.
