An ode to Polynesian nature and its sacredness, Tabu is Murnau's last film. Polish organist Karol Mossakowski accompanies these fascinating images, shot in Bora Bora with indigenous people, with his improvisations.

On the island of Bora Bora, a haven untouched by civilization, pearl diver Matahi is in love with the beautiful Reri. But the tribe's chief, Hitu, has decided to dedicate Reri to the gods, making her “taboo,” untouchable. As they flee to a neighboring island, the lovers are confronted with the disasters caused by Western civilization in their corner of paradise. Friedrich Murnau collaborated with Robert Flaherty on this film, which had colossal financial stakes. But differences soon erupted, and Flaherty left the shoot after the opening scene, appearing only as co-screenwriter. Murnau died in a car accident a week before the release of his last masterpiece, heavily in debt from a shoot that had taken him to the other side of the world.
