Recorded during a magical, entirely improvised concert at the Cologne Opera House on 24 January 1975 and released the same year by the legendary ECM label, The Köln Concert remains one of the most famous and admired jazz albums in history. Today, Maki Namekawa and Thomas Enhco offer a reinterpretation that is faithful to both the letter and the spirit of the original: the Japanese pianist – classically trained – performs the transcribed score of the concert, while the French jazz musician takes the melodic framework in new directions with his improvisations. By sharing this timeless work in this way, they breathe new life into it.
